Wings of Rescue is a donation based charity, flying large numbers of at risk, healthy pets long distances from high intake shelters to our network of no-kill shelters throughout the United States and Canada. Founded in 2012, Wings of Rescue has a squadron of volunteer pilots flying the rescue missions in their own airplanes, as well as a fleet of chartered cargo planes. In 2017 our goal is to to fly 10,000 pets to safety. Since our inception, over 26,000 pets have been flown to safety.
Within hours of Hurricane Harvey striking Texas, Wings of Rescue dispatched planes into the disaster zone and it has been non-stop flights ever since continuing straight through Hurricane Irma. Within the first two weeks, Wings of Rescue has flown 17 missions and saved over 1,500 dogs and cats and the number is rising daily. We will be continuing daily Harvey and Irma relief flights for as long as we are needed.
It is estimated that over 100,000 pets have been displaced by the hurricanes. Our rapid response team wants to assure everyone that the pets we are flying entered shelters prior to the storms and were unclaimed. We are flying these pets to safety to make room for the pets who are directly displaced by the hurricanes and resulting floods. Our goal is that all pets be reunited with their families and we have taken every precaution to make sure that no pet flown by Wings of Rescue had an owner. We are proud to be working hand in hand with two fabulous organizations, the Greatergood and the Humane Society of the United State’s emergency placement partner team to not only transport these pets but make sure that they are documented, vetted and that they end up in empty shelters from where they can be quickly adopted. No local shelter pets will be displaced by our transports and neither the pets we fly, nor the pets who were previously in receiving facilities can be euthanized.
The need on the ground is huge. Far too many pets across the hurricane belt – and we are not talking just Texas and Florida, we are including parts of Louisiana, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas are facing dire emergencies. Wings of Rescue and our partners is already flying towards them; but to continue our flights we need your support.
